Part of the second generation of Hudson River School painters, George Herbert McCord was born in New York and studied at the Hudson River Institute and the Claverack Academy. With an affinity for landscapes and coastal views, McCord utilized a variety of mediums including oil, watercolor, pastel, pen and ink. He extensively traveled for his artwork, garnering sponsors such as the Santa Fe Railroad Company to paint the Grand Canyon and Andrew Carnegie to paint their castle in Cluny, Scotland. McCord was elected an Associate of the National Academy and exhibited his work throughout the country.
