Franz Marc was born in 1880 in Munich, Germany, to an artist father who became his first artistic influence. He studied at the Munich Academy, and then left for Paris where he was influenced by Cubism and Fauvism. Upon his return to Germany, he helped to found the group the Blue Rider (Blaue Reiter) along with Paul Klee and Wassily Kandinsky. Their goal was to paint feelings and emotions rather than an exact representation, marking the beginnings of German Expressionism.
