Born in 1926, Paul Rebeyrolle was a French artist known for his political activism. As a young man, Rebeyrolle attended the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, where he was influenced by the works of Picasso, Cézanne, and Soutine. Throughout his lifetime, Rebeyrolle embraced many political movements, and was even a member of the French Communist Party during the 1940’s and 50’s. His artwork often features abstracted natural forms and landscapes which reflect the violence and struggle at the heart of nature and human society. Rebeyrolle’s work was respected internationally by prominent intellectuals including Jean-Paul Satre, and influenced the social realist movement of Great Britain. Today his work belongs in public and private collections such the Tate Gallery of London and the personal collection of François Pinault.
