Grooms was interested in art from an early age, and in 1923 he went to Paris to study painting at the Académie Julian in Paris. While in Paris he exhibited in the Spring Salons of both 1924 and 1925. In 1925, Reggie returned to Cincinnati to teach at the Cincinnati Art Academy and the University of Cincinnati School of Applied Arts.
