Additional Information Thomas Hart Benton, U. S. House of Representative member, was known as “Old Bullion”. He was an advocate for western expansion and author of the first Homestead Act. A biography was written on Benton by President Theodore Roosevelt and he was profiled in John F. Kennedy’s Profiles in Courage.
