WPA artist William Charles Palmer is known for his abstract figural scenes and landscapes, many of which focus on the changing seasons of upstate New York. Later in his career, many of his landscapes were rendered with flat areas of color intersected with areas of light. The artist studied at the Art Students League in New York with Thomas Hart Benton, Boardman Robinson, Henry Schnackenberg, and Allen Tucker. Palmer continued his studies at the École des Beaux Arts in Paris, then moved back to New York where he studied with Kenneth Hayes Miller. In 1939, he painted several murals for the Works Project Administration Fine Arts Project (WPA), including murals for the Hotel Roosevelt in New York, the Queens New York General Hospital, and the Arlighton Massachusetts and Monticello Iowa Post Office. Palmer’s work has been exhibited and collected by several reputable institutions such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the White House, among others.
