Lewis G. Folger was the father of Cincinnati artist Franklin L. Folger. Like his father before him, Lewis B. Folger, and his son Franklin after him, Lewis worked as an artist for The Cincinnati Enquirer. Like his father he started work primarily as a wood engraver, but with advancements in printing technology in the newspaper business, he soon began to pursue a career in photography. His photographs continued to appear in The Enquirer, but Lewis worked mainly for the City of Cincinnati as city photographer from the early years of the 20th century until the 1940s. In addition to covering city events, Lewis G. Folger also documented a number of public works projects throughout the downtown area including road expansion projects, maintenance of the city canal system, and the eventually abandoned city subway system.
