Jean Adolphe Beauce was born in Paris, France in 1818, and is known for his battle-scene paintings, military portraits, and illustrations for works by Alexandre Dumas. He began following the French army in 1843, traveling with their campaigns through North Africa, the Middle East and Mexico. Beauce died in 1875 and is buried in the 49th division of the cimetière du Père-Lachaise in Paris.

- painting has been relined; scattered inpainting, most notably along right sided; craquelure across painting surface; scattered accretion; nicks, cracking, abrasions and accretion to frame; separation to frame join to lower right.
