A catalogue of work from the 1954 retrospective of René Magritte’s work at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, Belgium. The catalog was compiled by Édouard L. T. Mesens with exhibition funding from La Sociéte Auxiliaire des Expositions de Palais des Beaux-Arts, and includes an introductory essay by Magritte, a brief auto-biography, statements from the artist’s friends and colleagues, a bibliography of writings about the artist and prior exhibitions of his work, and an illustrated catalogue of Magritte’s œvre with notes on provenance, exhibition, and publication of each entry. It is dedicated and signed and dated 1954 by René Magritte on the title page with an inscription in French reading ‘Cher Marcel, c’était ici comme maintenant,’ translated ‘Dear Marcel, it was then like it is now,’ as well as a sketch of a smoking pipe with the caption ‘(et ceci n’est pas devenu une pipe d’avantage)‘, translated as ’and this did not become a very good pipe’.

- toning to paper of cover and book block, with additional discoloration along spine; loose hinges to binding, with shaken but tight spine stitching; curl to cardstock paper binding cover; slight wrinkles to pages of catalogue text block, with wear around spine stitching; edge wear to pages and cover includes dented corners and surface abrasions to spine folds.
