Known for her floral landscapes and still lifes, American artist Edith White was born into a Quaker family in Decorah, Iowa and spent her childhood in northern California. She attended Mills Seminary in Oakland before studying at the California School of Design in San Francisco under painter Virgil Williams (American, 1830 – 1885). White held a studio in Los Angeles for ten years before moving to New York to spend a year studying at the Art Students League. After returning to California, she helped to establish the Pasadena Art Association. In 1902 White moved to Point Loma, where she spent 30 years teaching for the Theosophical Society. Her work is held in private and public collections nationwide, including at Mills College, Mt. Holyoke College, the San Diego Historical Society, and at the Denver Public Library.
