Prolific plein air landscape painter James Everett Stuart started painting at eight years old, when his family moved to a ranch near Rio Vista, California. He went on to train with David H. Woods before studying under Raymond Dabb Yelland and Virgil Williams at the San Francisco School of Design. His often moody and dramatic Western landscapes are seen by many as artistic descendants of the French Barbizon school. He is represented in the permanent collections of the Oakland Museum, the Witt Art Library at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London, the De Young Museum and the White House.

Condition

- discoloration to painting varnish; surface marks, abrasions, and chips to paint throughout sky; wear to date beneath signature, cracks throughout frame molding, with areas re-painted in a slightly different gold tone finish; scratches and edge wear to frame; wear to verso includes discolored and peeling tape, holes to frame wood, and surface tears and abrasions to board.
