Pierre Jules Mene was born in Paris, France, the son of a metal turner who was his first teacher of sculpture and foundry work. He remained mostly self taught, but was influenced by sculptor René Compaire, English painter Edwin Landseer, and French painter Carle Vernet. Mene focused was on sculpting animals, blending traditional realism and accuracy with the expressive sentimentality he admired. He first exhibited at the Paris salon of 1938, and continued throughout his life, earning several awards from the salon. He eventually established his own foundry, and was successful in selling his work directly to the public through catalogs.
