Hellä Broeske-Shattuck was an American artist born to Finnish immigrant parents in South Dakota. Growing up, her family moved around the Upper Midwest, and she trained as a classical concert pianist before beginning her artistic study with Clyde Leon Keller after a move to Portland, Oregon. In 1934, she drove by motorcycle from Portland to Santa Fe, New Mexico, where she quickly established herself in the local art scene. Broeske-Shattuck was named ‘Future Artist of New Mexico’ in 1938, and she spent many years travelling around the state and immersing herself in the local Hispanic and Native American cultures and both feature prominently in her paintings. She lived for a time at Laguna Pueblo and spent time as an artist in residence at Isleta Pueblo, where she met her second husband. The couple spent time in Taos, residing in the ‘Pink House’ under the patronage of Mabel Dodge Luhan, and eventually settled in Albuquerque. Hellä Broeske-Shattuck’s work is held at the New Mexico State Museum, The Finnish-American Heritage Center, and Mary Washington College, as well as in private collections worldwide.
