Wessel studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy in the late 1800s with other well-published artists such as Caroline Lord and Frank Duveneck, and later taught at the Art Academy for over 40 years. His work is represented in the collections of prestigious institutions, including Oakland Museum of California and The Fred Jones Jr. Museum of Art.
