Eastern Orthodox Church Veil for Chalice or Diskos, Late 18th Century

A goldwork embroidered Ecclesiastical textile from the late 18th century Eastern Orthodox Church in the shape of a cross, for use as a veil covering for the Eucharist chalice or diskos. The piece has a ground of satin-weave silk and metal foil thread and is decorated with padded stumpwork designs of a center cross, rippled borders, and floral sprigs embellished with sequins and stamped foil acorns and berries. At the center of each lappet are miniature oil paintings on leather of cherubim framed in wire wrapping and stumpwork wings. The edges are finished with a twisted fringe of metal-wrapped silk thread, and the piece is mounted on a textured board behind glass.

- significant tarnish to metal foil threads, sequins, and foil throughout; wear and loss to metal threads throughout, exposing silk core threads; stumpwork padding visible along edges and between some satin stitching; broken threads throughout; missing and broken foil acorns and berries; cracked paint and discoloration to cherub faces, with wax drip on surface of one; wrinkles throughout textile; scuffs and edge wear to frame.
