‘Pop’ Hart was known for his gestural watercolor paintings, etchings, and lithographs. Born in Cairo, Illinois, Hart found early work as a sign painter first in England and then back in Illinois. He found additional work as an illustrator for the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. Afterward, he studied at the Art Institute of Chicago and then the Académie Julian in Paris. A world traveler, he visited Central America, North Africa, the Caribbean, and the South Pacific, frequently capturing the scenes of everyday life in watercolor. As a member of the Fort Lee, New Jersey artists’ colony he developed friendships with Edward Hopper, Jules Pascin, Walter Kuhn and other noted artists. He also was associated with several members of the New York Social Realist group including Robert Henri and John Sloan. His work can be found in the permanent collections of many prestigious institutions including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Hirshhorn Museum, Washington DC, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.
