John (Giovanni) Califano was Italian-born artist known for his landscapes, genre scenes, and figure paintings. He studied in Naples under Domenico Morelli and received a gold medal for a local exhibition. In 1881, he immigrated to the United States, eventually settling in California in Van Nuys. He showed his work at several esteemed institutions including the Art Institute of Chicago and the National Academy of Design, New York.

- yellowing and discoloration to varnish; notable overpainting to scattered areas to the sky and to the upper left; overpainting over patches to the upper left and to the left edge; painting examined under black light; craquelure throughout; dents with paint loss to the canvas and frame to the upper right and left; stretcher marks; chips and scratches to the frame.
