Walter Florian was an up-and-coming American artist of the early 20th century before dying at the age of 31. Known for his portraits, notably of Auguste Rodin, he studied at the Art Students League of New York and the Metropolitan Museum of Art under Twachtman and studied abroad in Paris at the Academies Julian and Colarossi. He furthered his studies in Spain and in Holland where he met Josef Israels. Florian exhibited at several notable institutions including the Art Institute of Chicago, the St. Louis Exposition, Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and won several medals including for this work. After the artist’s death the piece was gifted by the artist’s father to the Metropolitan Museum of Art and later deaccessioned in 2004.

- based on previous images of the work, the signature and date to the lower left appear to have been overpainted; bitumen deformation to the center, lower right, and to the edges; extensive overpainting throughout excepting the face, shoulder, and hand; painting examined under black light; accretions and abrasions throughout, notably to the edges; cracks throughout the center; canvas relined; wax residue to the edges and verso possibly from lining; fraying and wear to edges.
