Daniel Charles Grose is known for his landscapes and pastoral scenes and has been linked to the second generation of Hudson River School artists. He was born in Whitby, England, but it was not until he moved to Canada in the 1860s that he started to work as an artist. His earliest known works depict romantic Quebec landscapes. He moved to the United States and married fellow artist Harriet Estella Smith. They traveled throughout the country and around the world painting scenes inspired by their travels, notably of California, Maine, the Rocky Mountains, and India. Many of Daniel Grose’s work can be found in Canadian museums and the Samuel Dorksy Museum of Art, New York.

- small areas of inpainting to the upper corners; painting examined under black light; accretions and slight discoloration, notable to the upper right; canvas wax-lined; scratches, chips, finish loss, discoloration, and accretions to frame.
