Anthony Ackrill is a contemporary academic realist painter who came to the pursuit relatively late in life, at the age of 37, after studying graphic design and a career in advertising. He began by painting on his own, and after selling several works he left for Florence, Italy to pursue a more formal education. He enrolled in an atelier style school that followed a strict academic approach similar to the European academies of the 19th century, with an emphasis on careful observation of nature and painting directly from life. Beginning in his second year he taught anatomy, drawing and painting to his fellow students. After five years of study and teaching in Florence he returned to Florida, where he currently maintains a studio. Ackrill’s work has been widely exhibited across America and Europe, and resides in the permanent collection of the Appleton Museum of Art in Ocala, Florida
