John Ward Dunsmore was born in Reilly, Ohio and was known for his portraits and historical scenes often depicting the American Revolutionary War. He studied at the Cincinnati (McMicken) School of Design under Thomas Noble and in Paris at the Petite Ecole with Aime Millet. He moved several times throughout the course of his life, working for several years in Cincinnati, Boston, London, Detroit, and New York. While in Detroit he was the director of the Detroit Museum (now Detroit Institute of Arts) and following that founded the Detroit School of Arts.
