Rufus Way Smith was a noted Ohio artist known for his landscapes of Ohio, New England, and the South. Born in Bedford, he grew up in Cleveland and studied the painting in the studio of Jarvis F. Hanks. He went on to study law at Hiram College and Ohio University, and worked as a lawyer for nearly a decade before transitioning back to his first love, painting. He studied art in Philadelphia and New York and exhibited at the Cleveland Art Academy and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts.
