Eric Pape was born in San Francisco and studied at the Mark Hopkins Institute with Emil Carlsen and abroad at the Ecole des Beaux Arts and Académie Julian with Gustave Boulanger, Jules Joseph Lefebvre, and Jean-Paul Laurens. He traveled extensively while abroad and lived for almost a year near the Great Pyramids and Sphinx. He taught for a year at the Cowles Art School in Boston before founding the Pape School of Art where he was the director for fifteen years. In addition to painting, Pape also worked as a theatrical set designer and as an illustrator including works by Henry James, H.G. Wells, and Robert Louis Stevenson. He had several solo exhibitions including at the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Detroit Museum of Art, and the St. Louis Museum of Art.

- cracks across lower half of painting; accretions to the lower right and left; warping and stretcher marks to canvas; abrasions, scratches, and finish loss throughout frame.
