Allen William Seaby (London 1867-1953) studied at Reading University’s School of Art where he was also a professor from 1920 – 1923. He was known as a painter, illustrato, writer and he was an influential exponent of the colour woodcut method with his subjects including birds, animals, and scenes from both the United Kingdom and Europe.
Allen William Seaby was a writer, illustrator, painter, and woodcut artist noted for his depictions of birds, animals, and British and European landscapes. Seaby studied at the Reading School of Art under Frank Morley Fletcher, where he developed a passion for woodblock printing in the Japanese style. Seaby later became a fine art professor and then department head at the University of Reading. He was an active advocate for the wild and native ponies of the British Isles and wrote and illustrated several books on the subject for children and adults including British Ponies: Running Wild and Ridden and Exmoor Lass and Other Pony Stories. Seaby also produced books on art history and instruction including Colour Printing with Linoleum and Wood Blocks and Art in the Life of Mankind.
