Alexei Stepanov, known for his paintings of folk scenes and animal landscapes, was born in Moscow and grew up in a branch of the Moscow Orphanage having lost both of his parents at a young age. He studied to become a surveyor but attended classes taught by noted Russian artists Illarion Pryanischnikow, Vasily Polenov, and Yewgraf Sorokin at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture. He began submitting illustrations for the magazine Природа и Охота (Nature and Hunting) and exhibited with the Peredvizhniki. The group, often called the ‘The Wanderers’ in English, were realists known for their depictions of the Russian landscape and its people and for their traveling exhibitions. Stepanov and a group of other artists broke from the Peredvizhniki to found the ‘Union of Russian Artists’.
