Considered a prominent painter in Boston and New York City in the early 20th century, John Lavalle was especially known for his portraits, city scenes, and World War II illustrations. He studied at Harvard University, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts with Philip Hale, and the Acádemie Julian with Jean Auburtin. He served in World War I as a first lieutenant and in the World War II Air Force, in addition to working as an U.S. Army artist. Eleven of his watercolors featuring air battles of World War II are housed in the Air Force Collection. Lavalle also illustrated books and was a member of several artist associations and institutions, including the Guild of Boston Artists, the American Water Color Society, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, among others.
