Adolf Konrad sometimes known as the ‘painter laureate of Newark’ was born in Bremen, Germany. He studied at the Scharrelman Schule and traveled to the German Worpswede art colony with his family. He immigrated to United States prior to World War II and his family settled in New Jersey where he studied at the Fawcett Art School and the Newark School of Fine and Industrial Arts under Bernard Gussow. He taught at Newark State College and in 1966, he had a one-man show at the Newark Museum. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Newark Museum, the New Jersey State Museum, and the National Academy of Design in New York.
