A portrait painting signed ‘F. Degenhardt’ and dated 1891, painted in the style of the German Munich School. It depicts a man with stern eyebrows and a full beard against a muted brown backdrop. The sitter’s dark brown hair and beard are streaked with gray, and he wears a formal shirt and jacket. Though his identity is unknown, the man wears a gold watch chain that ends in a fraternal symbol of the Masonic square and compass above a three-link chain, indicating a possible dual-membership in Freemasonry and the Independent Order of Odd Fellows. The piece was restored by Wiebold Studio in Terrace Park, Ohio and is labeled to the verso. It is presented in a reproduction gilt wood and gesso frame in the Barbizon style.

Condition

- restoration and conservation work to portrait includes relined and re-stretched canvas, cleaning, inpainting throughout surface, repair to canvas tear above center-right and structural consolidation to stabilize craquelure; slight discoloration to varnish present, with minor differences in surface sheen to varnish; slight visibility to stretcher marks in canvas; accretion to painting surface; accretion and slight wear to frame, including chipped eneer at corners; tears and tape to verso backing paper; backing paper was lifted to examine verso of painting.
