Alfred Charles Stanley Anderson (1884-1966) was a painter and etcher born in Bristol, England, the son of Alfred E. Anderson, an heraldic engraver. At the age of fifteen he joined his father’s business as an apprentice engraver which suspended his serious study of art for some time. In 1909 however, he won a British Institution Engraving Scholarship to the RCA (Royal College of Art) where he studied until 1911. His studies then continued at Goldsmiths’ College and he was elected an Associate of the RE 1910, RE 1923, an Associate of the RA 1934 and RA 1941. He exhibited internationally then represented his country at the Venice Biennale of 1938 as the only British entry in the line engraving and dry point section.
Anderson was a member of the Engraving Faculty at the British School at Rome from 1930-1952 and was awarded the CBE (Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) in 1951. His work which often depicts pastoral activity such as farm workers can be seen in many important galleries, but the Ashmolean at Oxford boasts a complete set of his etchings.
