Chauncey Foster Ryder was born in Connecticut, where he pursued his interest in art from an early age. He attended the Art Institute and Smith’s Academy in Chicago before moving to Paris to further his studies at Academie Julien. His style came to be known as “Ryder green” where his oil landscapes perpetuated a luminous quality with generalized details which fostered the aesthetic of the abstract without being abstract. Ryder also became prolific in other artistic crafts, such as drypoint etching and lithographs, after moving to his final home in New Hampshire. His works are represented in many important private and public collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in Philadelphia.
