Lucy Perkins Ripley was a ceramicist, sculptor, and painter known for her use of Ancient Greek, Etruscan, and Native American inspired figures and motifs. She studied at the Art Students League of New York with sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens. In Paris, she exhibited at the Societé des Beaux-Arts which brought her to the attention of Auguste Rodin of whom she became a pupil. She had a solo exhibition at Fifty-Sixth Street Galleries in New York and participated in exhibitions at the Art Institute of Chicago and the Dallas Museum of Art. Her work can be found in many private collections.

- edges of work unvarnished; accretions and cracks to the painting particularly to the impasto throughout the left side; minor pieces of debris adhered to impasto to the left and to the lower center; previous tack holes and wear along the outer edges of the canvas.
