Roman E. Johnson was an African-American painter from Columbus, Ohio known for his expressive works which, in his own words, were created “in an effort to enhance or continue the culture of black people”. His subject matter ranges from landscapes to portraits often incorporating themes related to social justice. Roman E. Johnson worked closely for several years with his mentor, Emerson Burkhart, also from Columbus. Johnson received an honorary doctorate degree from Ohio Dominican College in 1998 and a Governor’s Award for the Arts in Ohio as an individual artist recipient in 2003.
