Samuel Calvin was born in Pennsylvania in 1881, and is known for painting portraits and landscapes. He first studied art under Ellen Pope Galt at Hollidaysburg Seminary, and went on to continue his instruction with many notable artists, including Frank Duveneck (Ohio/Germany/Italy, 1848 – 1919), Howard Pyle (Deleware/Pennsylvania, 1853 – 1911), and in Paris under Emil Frenuet. He taught at the Hollidaysburg Seminary and later at the Army School in Le Mans, France. His works resides in many public buildings throughout Blair County, Pennsylvania.

Condition

- painting has been relined; scattered inpainting, most notably to the arms and surrounding area; craquelure across painting surface; abrasion with loss to varnish to center of right side; scattered small areas of paint loss; several nicks, cracking and accretion to frame.
