A hand-colored etching titled Operatic May by Pittsburgh artist Robert Qualters (born 1934), juxtaposed with a poem of the same title by Pittsburgh poet Gail Ghai. Qualters met Ghai while taking a poetry writing class, and soon thereafter began illustrating her poems, marking the beginning of their long-term professional relationship. This particular illustration, includes themes about the weather, which was a favorite subject of Qualters’. Other print and poem collaborations between Qualters and Ghai include While in the Phipps’ Butterfly Exhibit and Apple Elegy set in the Western Pennsylvanian landscape, and On the Corner of Craig and Forbes named after two streets located in Oakland, Pittsburgh and currently housed in the Carnegie Museum of Art.
Based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Robert Qualters is a painter, printmaker, and installation artist. He studied at Carnegie Tech, then obtained his B.F.A. from the California College of Arts and Crafts and his M.F.A. from Syracuse University. In 1985, the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts awarded him Artist of the Year, and in 2014, was the recipient of the Governor’s Award for Artist of the Year in Pennsylvania. Qualters is a former President of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh and has had more than 30 solo exhibitions throughout his lifetime. In addition, he has completed over two-dozen public murals and site-specific installations. His work has been exhibited and collected by numerous institutions including the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Oakland California Museum of Art, the Westmoreland County Museum of Art, Concept Art Gallery, Carson Street Gallery, and Borelli Edwards, among others. Recently in 2014, a monograph by Vicky Clark titled Robert Qualters: Autobiographical Mythologies was published, chronicling the artist’s work and life up to his 80th birthday.
