Hubert Bellis was a Belgian painter, born in 1831. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels under François-Joseph Navez, and later under Henri De Coene. He began his career as a decorative painter, establishing a studio with his brother. After 1875 he became known for his still life paintings, that in the beginning were academic studies and over time evolved into expressive works often featuring flowers, oysters and the detritus from parties.
