George Rhoads is an American painter, sculptor, and origami master who is best known for his large-scale kinetic sculptures. He was born in Evanston, Illinois, in 1926, and attended the University of Chicago, where he studied physics and mathematics before transferring to Chicago’s Art Institute to study art and design. He moved to New York City to become a painter but met with limited success and so in 1952 he left for Paris. There he met the origami master Gershon Legman, igniting Rhoads’ interest in the art form. After his return to the U.S in the 1960s he began experimenting with kinetic metal sculptures that incorporated sound, eventually leading to large-scale commissions in public spaces throughout the country. Rhoads’ work resides in the permanent collections of Museum of Modern Art, NYC; The Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois; The Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio; The Wadsworth Atheneum, Hartford, Connecticut, and more.
