Frans Hens was a Belgian Post-Impressionist painter, and one of the first European artists to paint in Sub-Saharan Africa. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp under Romantic painter Jacob Jacobs, though his own work was heavily influenced by Post-Impressionist exhibitions of Antwerp’s Cercle Artistique. He traveled to Africa in 1886-1888, painting landscapes along the Congo River. In Belgium, he painted extensively along the River Scheldt and at the coast, and he belonged to the Wechelse School of artists who held a studio at the inn In Den Keyser. He was a founding member of the artists’ associations De XIII and Kunst van Heden, as well as belonging to the groups Pour l’Art and Weest U Zelve (Be Yourself). His work is held in multiple Belgian museum collections, as well as in private collections worldwide.
