Born in 1827, George Douglas Brewerton was a sketch artist, painter, journalist, pastor, and army officer. As a young man he studied under the artist Robert Weir and joined the army as the Mexican/American War became imminent. In 1852, Brewerton became a special correspondent for the New York Times and wrote articles for Harper’s Monthly and the New York Herald. He held an exhibition of his paintings at the National Academy of Design and spoke of his travels across the country. Brewerton then became a pastor of a Baptist Church in Pennsylvania. He wrote various books and poetry that he illustrated himself about history and his experiences in the military. Brewerton ultimately continued to travel and paint the landscapes on his way through New Mexico, Arizona, and California.
