Raised in Brooklyn, New York, Sydney Laurence enrolled in the National Academy of Design under Thomas Moran followed by a study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts. After the war, Laurence was lured to Alaska with promises of gold before ultimately making it his home, which in turn made him the first professionally trained artist to reside there. Beginning with a tonalist style, Laurence developed his own signature style of painting, which became a combination of realism, luminism, tonalism, and impressionism.
