John Alfred Cook was born and raised in Massachusetts on Cape Ann, where he was inspired as a child by the Boston-based painter William Morris Hunt. He is known for his watercolors of the waterfront and maritime life in Gloucester and Boston, MA. He was a member of the Society of Independent Artists, the Boston Art Club, the Gloucester Society of Artists, and the North Shore Arts Association, and held a gallery in the Hawthorne Inn on the eastern shore of the Gloucester Harbor.
