Additional Information | A 19th century needlework sampler, identified as Danish by the flag and crown motifs stitched to the lower left. It features a collection of Berlin Woolwork motifs in the lower half, below four alphabet samples and numerals 1-9. Included are examples of the Dano-Norwegian letters Æ and Ø in both upper and lower case, as well as the long s (ſ). The alphabets are stitched using interchangeable letterforms for I and J as well as W and V; the first two alphabets leave out the letters X, Y, and Z, and the larger two are shortened to A-P to fit the canvas size. |
Condition
- discoloration and warping to cotton canvas ground; some fading and discoloration to wool stitching; minor surface accretion to textile; wear and slight pilling to wool, with stitches missing in roof of church to lower right, indicative of insect damage; scuffs, abrasions, and edge wear to frame; separation of frame corner joins.
