Peter Lanz Hohnstedt was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. He first studied art under Frank Duveneck (Ohio/Germany/Italy, 1848 – 1919) before moving to New Orleans, where the Delgado Museum commissioned a painting and thus launched his career. A wealthy patron enabled him to paint the swamps and landscapes of Louisiana and Mississippi. He later settled in Comfort, Texas where he opened a downtown studio and painted the local landscapes and community.

- embrittled canvas across upper portion; stretcher marks; craquelure and accretion across painting surface; nicks, abrasions and accretion to frame.
