Syrian Kurdish artist Omar ‘Malva’ Hamdi is especially known for his paintings of landscapes, still lifes, and townscapes, often rendered in post-impressionist or expressionist style with vibrant colors and loose, bold brushstrokes. He worked in Syria as a graphic artist for the Syrian Press, then emigrated to Austria in 1978. He was a member of UNESCO, the General Federation of Austrian Artists, and the Künstlerhaus – Wien. Hamdi’s work has been exhibited and collected by numerous institutions including the Galerie Wally Findlay in New York, the National Museum in Cracow, and the Tehran Museum of Modern Arts, among others. In addition, many of his works have been published on postcards and posters, and distributed worldwide.
