Shelton was raised in Boston, Massachusetts and studied at the Museum School of Fine Arts. He originally specialized in portraiture, but the sea captured his interest and he moved to the coast of Maine, where he painted dramatic seascapes and spent time working in Winslow Homer’s studio. In 1962 he returned to Boston to head the Fine Arts department at the Butera School of Art, leaving after two years to settle in New Hampshire. He was a member of the Guild of Boston Artists, Allied Artists of America, and the Copley Society of Boston among others, and his work resides in the collections of the Farnsworth Museum, Rockland, Maine, and at Bowdoin College, Maine.
