Mary Cable Butler is especially known for landscape and seascape paintings, many of which are rendered in a post-impressionist style with loose expressive brushstrokes. She studied at the Philadelphia School of Design for Women (now Moore College of Art) and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts under artists William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri. She continued her studies in New Hope, Pennsylvania under Edward Redfield, then traveled to Paris where she worked in the ateliers of Prinet, Courtois, and Girardot. Butler was a member of several artists association and served as President of the Fellowship of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, for which she started a movement known as American National Art Week and organized exhibitions throughout eastern Pennsylvania. Her work has been collected and exhibited by numerous institutions including the Art Institute of Chicago, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Albright-Knox Gallery, and the Carnegie Art Institute, among many others.
