Hernando Villa was born in Los Angeles, California, to a musician mother and artist father who had come from Baja, California when it was still a part of Mexico. He first studied art at the School of Art & Design under Louise Garden-MacLeod, and after a brief period of study in England and Germany, returned there to teach. He established a commercial studio in Los Angeles, and worked as an illustrator, producing numerous works in oil, watercolor, pastel and charcoal. He is known for his portrayals of the Old West, Native Americans and Mexican cowboys.
