Jacques Colbert’s style ranges from Realism to Post-Impressionism to abstraction. Recognized as a mastery of color with a focus on painterly brushwork, his common subjects include landscapes, portraits, whimsical figures, cathedrals, and southwestern genre scenes. Colbert studied at the Cincinnati Art Academy in the 1930s, then continued his studies in Paris while serving in the army in the 1940s. After moving to California, he attended San Jose University and the DeYoung Museum Art School in San Francisco. The artist worked as a mechanical illustrator for Lockheed and operated a graphic art studio in Los Angeles. He also frequently visited Taos, New Mexico and showed his work in the New Mexico Art League.
