Pál Fried was born in Budapest and studied under Hugo Pohl at the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts. He continued his studies in Paris under the Impressionist painter Claude Monet and under Lucien Simone. His work mostly focused on portraiture and the female form and he became known for his depictions of fashionable Parisian women, ballerinas, and nude studies. He traveled extensively in Europe and Africa and following World War I emigrated to the United States and taught at the Academy of Arts in New York. In the 1950s he moved to Hollywood, where for the next two decades he created portraits of many of its most famous celebrities including Marilyn Monroe and the Gabor sisters. He also developed an interest in horses and created several horse racing and Western scenes.
