Vellum Indenture Documents For Regent Street Property Lease of London, 1837

Item Details

A five-page handwritten property lease document on vellum, dated March 8th, 1837. The document begins, “This Indenture made the eighth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirty seven Between George Taylor of Regent Street in the parish of St. James in the City and Liberty of Westminster Tailor of the first part, Charles Kennerley and Thomas Bidgood of Marylebone Street Piccadilly in the said City Drapers and Mercers of the second part, and William Raper of Tilchborne Street, Piccadilly aforesaid pork butcher of the third part…”. The focus of the documents is centered around the assignment of “…mefsuage and premises No. 151 Regent Street in the County of Middlesex…” to William Raper. Regent Street at that time was newly constructed and was an early example of town planning for London. The street later flourished as a hub for fashion that continues today.
Physically, the documents include provisions to the original indenture and detailed assignments for each party involved. Red wax seals and signatures are present for the four named men. Each page contains a blue embossed revenue stamp with a value of one pound five shillings, a London locality stamp, and George IV royal cypher stamps. The vellum retains a maker’s mark for Shaw & Sons Parchment Dealers on Fetter Lane in London.
