Josef Liesler was a Czech painter, sculptor, illustrator, and graphic designer associated with Surrealism. Liesler attended the University of Architecture and Structural Engineering in Prague (now known as the Czech Technical University), where he studied under famous Czech artists such as Oldřich Blažíček, Cyril Bouda, and Josef Sejpka. Following the annexation of Czechoslovakian territory by Nazi Germany in the Munich Agreement, he helped found a group of artists called ‘The Seven,’ which was devoted to producing art in protest of German aggression. Over the course of his life, Liesler earned international recognition and renown, and was even elected as an honorary member of prestigious art societies such as the Academy of Florence and the Royal Academy of Science, Letters, and Fine Arts of Belgium. Today, Liesler’s work belongs to numerous private and public collections, including the Uffizi Gallery of Florence.
